Like nearly everyone else, our 2020 didn’t quite go as planned. The idea became reality in 2015, when the organization acquired a historic building that once served as the headquarters for the NAACP in Detroit’s North End. #Reeder music academy professional#The concept for the Underground Music Academy is one that had been bubbling in the minds of the team of community leaders in the North End of Detroit for years.īorne from their shared experiences informally mentoring up-and-coming Detroit artists, as well as touring the world as professional musicians and multidisciplinary visionaries, the team saw the potential of creating something local in Detroit that could connect to their global community. This is the foundation of the Underground Music Academy approach. We also know from experience that access to mentorship and advice from working professionals can accelerate growth but historically too few people have had access to this kind of mentorship. We believe that creating a safe space for people to explore and find themselves will help them channel their creativity. We will accomplish this goal by teaching the two pillars of electronic music: DJing and music production. Our goal is to provide accessible and affordable music education to residents of Detroit, and ultimately, the world. Our vision for electronic music in the future is one that puts the values of originality, quality and diversity at its core, in realignment with the genre's origin. This location is no coincidence, as we plan to both literally and figuratively continue down this road honoring the legacy of those who came before us while supporting the next generation of electronic musicians. UMA is located in Detroit’s North End neighborhood, at the intersection of the city’s new technology corridor and a boulevard rooted in music history – just a few blocks down from the original Motown headquarters, and on the same block as the world’s first techno museum, Exhibit 3000, housed on the ground floor of Underground Resistance’s complex. You may enjoy the experience, and if you do not, you could still go the distance with Jazz Mix 12, because it only lasts 27 minutes. The Underground Music Academy (UMA) is a Detroit-based community music hub that aims to build the future leaders of electronic music through its distinctive educational curriculum and mentorship model, rooted in Detroit’s Black electronic music legacy. You can be certain that conservatives all over the world will hate every nano second they hear and for that reason alone Reeder deserves to be given a hearing. Whether you enjoy his music is another matter. He shows no sign of mellowing and one has to admire his dogged singlemindedness. Reeder has been recording since around 2012, mainly self releasing on his own EAF and ELR labels. Reeder intends it to sound like that: he studied composition and performance at London's Royal Academy of Music and Oxford's Oxford Brookes University. #Reeder music academy free#He plays his apparently in the moment trombone lines, which are free of much melodic or harmonic development, over a skeletal electronic backing track which sounds like the sort of insistent but indistinct noise which comes through a party wall if you have an inconsiderate neighbour, or if there is a car parked up in the street with its windows closed and the volume and bass controls turned up to eleven. Reeder makes music that could be described as noise jazz. Such courageous souls are determined to pursue their muse, and more power to them. It is, however, strangely compelling, as is the music of any artist who has rejected compromise and commerciality regardless of the financial consequences. British trombonist and sound designer KT Reeder's Jazz Mix 12 does not make for easy listening and nor, presumably, is it meant to.
